Hradek On Free Agents

I love the few weeks between the end of the NHL season and the free agency signing period. Speculation runs wild and everybody says they know where the best players are going. And, almost always, the predictions are worthless.

Would Ryan Smyth pass on a 10-year deal with the Islanders in favor of Detroit?

Would Chris Drury say no to the Western Conference and join the Rangers?

Would Scott Gomez be a good fit in Atlanta?

Yes, says EJ Hradek on ESPN's hockey podcast today. And is he going to be proven right? Who the hell knows? Who cares? All I know is trying to predict this stuff is both fun and absolutely meaningless in the end.

Yeah, anything before about June 15th or so is a little tough to believe. Really anything before July 1 is, but there are at least credible rumors before that.

What's the Avs cap situation? Could they make a run at Drury and/or (preferably and) Briere? If those two can somehow be lured out of the Northeast Division, this EASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPION* Sens fan would be very, very grateful.

*Sorry...sorry. Don't mean to be smug. I'm afraid it's a new nervous tic. It just comes out like that. Mostly during board meetings. It's like Tourette's, only way more fun.

The Avs have about $10M coming off the books, and also another $4-5M coming in the form of cap increase. They should have a very healthy cap situation.
